“Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof” (1 Peter 5:2).
There are those today who feel they can serve the Lord effectively on an independent basis without the church and without pastoral leadership. There is often reluctance to being subject to any spiritual authority. But the Lord established the church not only for his glory, but also for the edification of his people. So it is important that they are part of a local church. As we look at our text we are reminded,
First, God’s plan has always involved leadership. When we observe in Israel in the Old Testament, the leaders of the nations of earth, and certainly the church itself -- we see God uses leaders.
Second, we consider the work of the Shepherd. The shepherd, or pastor, is to oversee the flock and feed the flock.
Third, we consider the response of the sheep. They are to respect the shepherds, receive the Word preached by them, and follow them as they follow Christ.
