Elijah’s prophetic ministry could be summed up as a battle against idolatry. And in a day in which we wrestle with personal and cultural idolatry as much as any in history, this prophet's words are still powerful and timely.
After all, if the God of the Bible really is God, then of course we should follow him! Of course we ought to adore him, submit to him, and obey his kind commands. On the other hand, if the God of the Bible is not God after all, then we ought to lay aside our half-hearted, double-minded pursuit of him and instead dedicate ourselves to something or someone else.
The one thing that makes no sense, that ought not to continue -- as Elijah himself says -- is limping back and forth between these two different views of the world.
