In our studies in the gospel of John, we come to a portion today where Jesus gives a summary of things he had been teaching. There is often repetition in Jesus’ teachings, which is a reminder to us of how we need to hear basic truth set forth on a regular basis.
First we see the object of faith. In John 6:47 Jesus said, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.” And in the passage before us Jesus says that the one who believes on him believes on the one that sent him. True faith in God and access to him must be through his Son Jesus Christ.
Next we consider the blessing of faith. Jesus is light and he declares, “whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.”
Then we note the consequence of unbelief. There is judgment coming to those who reject Jesus' words.
And finally we see the end of faith. Jesus said he spoke as the Father had directed him and that he spoke of life everlasting.
