Times have changed. In the early days of my ministry people asked questions like, "Does the Bible teach the eternal security of the believer?," or "Can you go to heaven without being baptized?" But now I talk to people who have no concept of accountability to God and question whether a loving God would actually punish someone for their sin.
So in this message we are dealing with some of the basic truths relating to the gospel.
First, we consider the fact that there is one true and living God. While God is love, he is also a God of wrath and will punish the wicked.
Second, we note that God has established laws, and third that there is a penalty for violating his law. Since all have sinned and come short of the glory of God, all in nature are justly condemned.
Fourth, the good news of the gospel is: God has provided a Savior. Jesus, the Son of God, died for sinners and it is through his redemptive work that lost souls are rescued. Salvation is a gift bestowed freely by grace.
The question then is sometimes asked, "How can I know that I am right with God?" Have you seen yourself as a sinner deserving nothing? Have you repented, confessing your sin and turning from it? Have you believed on the Lord Jesus Christ?
"He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him" (John 3:36).
