"And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people" (Luke 2:10).
Joys derived from the things of earth are short lived, but the joy that is of the Lord sustains us in our deepest trials. It was a message of great joy that the angel brought at the time of the Savior's birth.
We observe that there was joy because of the promises now fulfilled. By prophecy and types the Old Testament contained the message that the Savior would come.
So there was joy because the Savior is born. He came to save sinners, he redeemed them, and he will one day bring them all to live with him forever.
Furthermore, there was joy because of the extent of the good tidings. There was the joy of Mary, of Elizabeth, of the shepherd, and of Simeon.
There was joy, and is joy today, for those in great need -- because Jesus came to save sinners.
