“For, behold, the day cometh, that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble: and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the Lord of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch.”
First we say the passage speaks of a dark day of judgment. There was judgment to come on Israel to whom the prophet was speaking but the day of the general judgment was no doubt in view as well. But then we see against the dark backdrop of the Day of Judgment, there is a day of bright hope. And finally there is a day of glorious victory. What a day when the saints rejoice in the Saviour’s presence and praise the conquering king!
